Outstanding Ex Requirments
The El Paso High Alumni Association is seeking nominations for Outstanding Ex. The nominee must have graduated from EPHS, be a respected leader or representative of his profession and community with a life long record of service and/or professional accomplishments. The nominee must be available to participate in homecoming activities for the fall of 2012.
Nominations should be sent directly to The El Paso High School Alumni Association, 800 Schuster, El Paso, Texas 79902.
A nomination for Outstanding Ex can take any form, in writing, but the more detail on the accomplishments of the proposed honoree, the better, and should include his/her address and phone, fax, cell and email, as well as the same information for the person nominating.
Qualifications:
1. Nominee must be a graduate of El Paso High;
2. Nominee must be available to participate in homecoming activities ;
3. A letter of nomination and a resume of the nominee including contact information (i.e. phone number) should be submitted no later than August 1, 2012; and
4. Nominee should be a good role model for the students with a record of service and /or professional accomplishments in their community.
2011 Oustanding Ex – Jimmy Rogers, Jr. – Class of 1952
Jimmy Rogers Jr. has been named the 2011 Outstanding Ex by the El Paso High Alumni Association. He will be recognized during Homecoming Week at the school, October 17-22. A reception to honor Mr. Rogers is scheduled for Thursday, October 20, in the main hall of the school. Cost of the reception is $25 and reservations can be made by calling Letty Navarro at 539-4184 or Linda Troncoso at 539-1650. Checks should be mailed to EPHS Alumni Association at 1324 Sabrina Lyn, El Paso, TX, 79936. Reservations must be made no later than October 14.
A native El Pasoan, Jimmy Rogers Jr. was elected Student Body President and graduated with the class of 1952 at El Paso High. He went on to Southern Methodist University and received his degree before he entered the US Air Force. He served three years with the Air Force before he returned to his hometown. Over the years he has served on a multitude of community boards including the El Paso Chamber of Commerce Foundation, UTEP Development Board, El Paso Holocaust Museum, El Paso Sports Commission, and the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau. He has served as president or chairman of the El Paso Sheriff’s Posse, El Paso Board of Realtors, Regional Economic Development Corporation and the Sierra Providence Healthcare Network.
He was named “Legend of the Sun Bowl” for his continued service to the Sun Bowl Association serving as Chairman Emeritus, Director and Executive Committee, CBS Liaison, and Football Selection Committee. He has received the City of El Paso’s highest award “The Conquistador Award” in 1962 and 1988. His continued service to this community has been acknowledged with countless other awards from the Jaycees (outstanding Young Men of El Paso and America), LULAC’s “ Humanitarian Award”, County of El Paso’s “Del Norte Award”, Rotary’s “Distinguished Service Award, El Paso Business Hall of Fame, and the El Paso Sports Hall of Fame.
From the Sun Bowl:
A native El Pasoan, Jimmy Rogers, Jr. has often been referred to as Mr. Sun Bowl for his years of dedication. The 2010 edition of the Hyundai Sun Bowl marks the 50th consecutive game that Rogers has been a member of the Association’s Board of Directors, serving in various capacities throughout the years.
Jimmy Rogers, Jr.He serves on the Sun Bowl Association Board of Directors and is the organization’s CBS liaison. He is also the chair emeritus of the football committee, for which he has been a member of for over 40 years. Rogers served as president of the Sun Bowl Association in 1970.
One of the Sun Bowl trophies awarded after each bowl game is named in honor of Rogers – the Jimmy Rogers, Jr. Most Valuable Lineman Trophy. He has participated in CBS Television negotiations for close to four decades and in negotiations for the bowl’s sponsorships with both John Hancock, Wells Fargo, Helen of Troy and Hyundai. Rogers also secured the Sierra Providence sponsorship for the SunClassic Basketball Tournament.
Rogers was honored with the Bud Dudley Bowl Executive Award at the All-American Football Foundation’s Banquet of Champions XVIII in 1999. Rogers has served as UTEP Touchdown Club President (1968) and UTEP Athletic Advisory Committee Chairman (1972). He is the past chairman of the El Paso Sports Council and was named to the El Paso Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
